Both Right and Diagonal silent chain couplings have a torque capacity that is greater than the biggest diameter moderate steel shaft on which it is mounted. The decision between the both types is often determined by simple installation in a particular application.
There are two models of Ramsey silent chain couplings, the Straight Type and the Diagonal Type. Straight Type couplings are composed of coupling halves that are split perpendicular to the shaft axis. A hardened metal silent chain joins the two halves. Diagonal Type couplings are split at an angle to the shaft axis. Because of the angular split, the chain that wraps a Diagonal couplings can be loaded in shear,along with tension. This results in Diagonal couplings having a relatively higher load capability than straight couplings, where in fact the chain is loaded in shear.
